When an anchor chain stopper wears beyond serviceable limits, the vessel’s ability to hold its cable safely is compromised — and port state control and class will not let it sail unresolved. Qualships Australia recently completed a full anchor chain stopper renewal, port and starboard, on a container vessel alongside in Sydney, demonstrating the heavy-section fabrication and marine compliance capability we bring to every job.
The challenge: worn chain stoppers and a damaged bitter end
The vessel’s original chain stoppers were worn at the chain bearing faces, leaving excessive clearance between the anchor cable and the stopper — the locking plate could no longer take up the cable positively. In the chain locker, the port bitter end plate and pin bracket were damaged, affecting the emergency release arrangement.
With the vessel on a working schedule, replacement units from the original maker were not a practical option. The solution: fabricate new stoppers locally, to the maker’s exact dimensions, from Australian-certified steel.
Our solution: precision flame cutting from 100 mm certified plate
Our tradesmen templated the original stopper geometry on board, then flame-cut new chain stopper plates from certified 100 mm thick steel plate in our Sydney workshop — matched to the maker’s original dimensions and supported by a full material equivalence assessment against the original class test certificate. The certified Australian plate (AS/NZS 3678-350) exceeded the original grade’s tested mechanical properties, and the assessment was submitted to and accepted by the attending classification surveyor before cutting.
The new stoppers were installed in place with renewed support brackets, the stopper landing areas corrected for true seating on the cable, and every weld completed by our class-approved welders.
Complete scope, one contractor
Beyond the stoppers themselves, our team delivered the full associated scope:
• Bitter end repair — crop and insert of new plate and pin bracket in the chain locker, with the sliding pin release mechanism repaired and function-verified
• Cockspur pipe crack repair — prepared, weld-repaired and dressed
• Windlass brake band — removed for renewal with new securing hardware supplied
• Supplementary anchor securing — new lashing padeyes welded at deck strong points, in line with flag state recommendations
• Independent verification — 100% visual inspection plus magnetic particle testing of all welds by a third-party NDT company, with full material traceability
Class and flag state coordination from start to finish
Marine structural repairs live or die on paperwork as much as workmanship. Qualships prepared the repair plan, material equivalence assessment and method statements, coordinated approvals with the classification society (DNV) and AMSA, and presented the completed work for survey — a single point of responsibility from first inspection to final credit.
